Data journals

The science world has recently witnessed the emergence of journals that focus specifically on the publication of data papers. This development is decisive in the publication culture and the manner in which people handle research data. Data journals ensure that large datasets are fully described, cited and discovered.

A data paper describes a dataset, with details about the collection, processing, software, file formats and other features, without the necessity of reporting new analyses or ground-breaking conclusions. It provides the reader with insight into the manner in which the data were collected, along with insight into the data product.

One example of such a data journal is the Geoscience Data Journal
