Data Refinement Fund

The Data Refinement Fund offers researchers a budget to make their valuable and reusable research data available online. So a researcher who needs to refine the data for proper discoverability and reusability, for example, by adding extra metadata, standardisation, format shifting or more documentation, can apply for this fund. The fund can then pay for additional resources, such as a student assistant.

Only  researchers and research projects from TU Delft, Eindhoven University or University of Twente are eligible for the Data Refinement Fund.

Once the data is refined, it will be deposited in  the 4TU.ResearchData Archive, where it will be published open access with a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).

Benefits for Recipients

  • Refined valuable and reusable data, available for new research.
  • Increased visibility of your research.
  • Becoming a 4TU.ResearchData showcase of unique data collections.
  • Your refined data might be suitable to be also published in a data paper and get additional attention. and visibility.
  • You can submit a request for data that is not related to a publication, but is valuable for long-term. storage and sharing with the research community.
  • 4TU.ResearchData offers advice during the process of data refinement.

  • 4TU.ResearchData will not supply any research-related support in the budgeting process.
  • The data has to be deposited in the 4TU.ResearchData archive.
  • The recipient of funding will do an interview with 4TU staff, to have their work showcased at 4TU.ResearchData.
  • The applicant uses all resources and technical devices already existing, and only lists important new acquisitions.

The fund will be distributed on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Researchers, can submit a request if they meet the following criteria:

  • The corresponding researcher must have a demonstrable relationship with TU Delft, Eindhoven University or University of Twente.
  • The corresponding researcher must have created the research data in affiliation with one of these three universities.
  • The compensation for the costs is maximized at € 5.000 per data set, costs are reimbursed on the basis of real expenses.
  • Costs cannot be used to pay for archiving costs (archiving costs are € 4.50 per GB for datasets above 1 TB).
  • Researchers are restricted to one application per year.

Requests to the Data Refinement Fund

  • University email address.
  • Name, department and university.
  • Short description of data-files that should be refined, recovered, rescued.
  • Creation background: ancient / finished years ago / recently finished research / ongoing research.
  • Budgeting details: data volume and characteristics; refinement actions needed; time period and responsibilities; list and breakdown of estimated costs.
  • The maximum financial contribution for a data refinement is € 5.000.

Administration Process

  • Within 5 working days the applicant will be informed about the funding decision.
  • The quality of potential reusability or value of the data-set is not part of the application evaluation criteria, however the applicant has to state a clear value and reuse reasoning.
  • The proposed data refinement budget cannot be modified after the funding is confirmed and received.
  • 4TU.Research Data reserve the right to request the money back from the applicant's department, should the funding beneficiary not meet the established criteria stated in the budget plan and regarding open access publishing.
